Three Unresolved Issues In Revelation & Eschatology
1) the timing of the rapture
2) the nature and length of the tribulation
3) the nature and length of the millennium
The Rapture
Regarding the rapture, there are basically two views:
1) Pretribulational, meaning Christians are raptured prior to or at the beginning of a 7-year period of tribulation (Daniel’s 70th week).
2) Posttribulational, meaning Christians are raptured at the end of a period of tribulation.
The Tribulation
How one views the tribulation affects how one understands the rapture and the millennium.
1) Many believe that the tribulation is a definite 7-year period (again, Daniel’s 70th week).
2) Others believe that the tribulation is an undefined period coming in the future.
3) Still others believe that the tribulation is the entire period of church history between the two comings of Christ.
The Millennium
There are basically three views:
1) The millennium is a literal period of 1000 years under the rule and reign of Christ setup at His second coming. (Premillennialism)
2) The millennium is an undefined “golden” period of history in which increased expansion of the gospel and kingdom will usher in the second coming of Christ. (Postmillennialism)
3) The millennium is not a literal period of human history on earth but is symbolic for Christ’s reign in heaven during the church age until He puts “all things under His feet” (1 Corinthians 15:24-25) and returns in glory to consummate all history and restore all things. (Amillennialism)
